And again the 10th of the month has come an gone and there was a new Block Challenge by The Electric Quilt Company! This time I used vertical strips as layout and worked hard to disguise the original block a little. ;-)

Why don't you join in for this month's EQ8 Block Spotlight? It is fun, will give you a small challenge and with a little luck, you will have a wonderful quilt design in the end. By the way, the other designs which are already online are highly worth seeing!

Tranquility Quilt

-----------------------------------------------------------

Some weeks ago, I posted blocks which belong to this quilt. Sampler quilts are great and like a good box of chocolates - every piece a delight because it never gets boring. :-)

Half of the blocks are own designs and, together with the "historic" blocks, form the basis for the book "Patchwork Puzzle ZWEI" which we (again) sell through our Webshop. Sorry, only available in German. If somebody would like to make an own version of the "Tranquility Quilt... :-)

--------------------------------------------

Most likely it will not every single leg of @orndinggoesnorway to inspire a quilt design, but Burg Heidenreichstein gave the necessary impetus. :-) The block in the middle presented rather a challenge and now I am quite satisfied with the implied Renaissance towers in the corners and with the ivy covering the fortress...

-----------------------------------------------

Only quite recently, I noticed the EQ8 Block Spotlight by The Electric Quilt Company. And I would really like to recommend this "monthly homework" to other EQ8 users! :-)

I had a lot of fun with my June design based on the block "Nebraska Tulips"! :-) And this although I realized that diagonally arranged applique flowers are not really my thing... :-D

The new EQ8 Block Spotlight is available around the 10th of each month.

--------------------------------------------

Blocks like this are the subject of our EQ8 Werkraum Beginners' Class! In three evenings, we build up the basics in EQ8 - all in a happy and relaxed (online) class environment. Sometimes I am asking myself whether I teach these classes for the students or rather for myself.

Sorry, currently we only offer our EQ8 online classes in German.

Geschwungene Sechsecke - Curved Hexagons

-------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------

Actually I wanted to sew cucumbers, but the curved hexagons were stronger... The shapes sort of "emerged" during our EQ8 Werkraum class on Islamic Tile Patterns when we were discussing 60° angles. And since Anke of Pasacana Designs showed me how to piece curves in EPP, I really got back into the EPP groove after the fourth seam... ;-) Not surprisingly it was a good decision to start with the 2" hexagons - the curves are challenge enough and so it is not necessary to exaggerate with small pieces (however, the 1" curved hexagons are already within my reach).

The fabrics are @miakoraltd and @oakshott.fabrics and have been lying in waiting for a while to be made into something. And it became quite obvious that, thimble aside, a pair of glasses for "close-up work" are a necessity now in my sewing toolbox...

Reisen bildet - Nothing like travelling

----------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------

There is nothing like travelling and sometimes inspiration lies at your feet. In my case in the shape of this gully.

This resulted in a design (see first photo below) - surprise, of course in EQ8. The technique I used is a sort of invisible reverse applique - unfortunately, I don't know the correct name.

The fabrics are Oakshott. I love to use them for handquilting because of their fantastic colouring. Warp and weft threads have different colours which results in a silk-like sheen and different shading depending from where you look at the piece. The second photo might explain why I chose these very colours.

PS: If you'd like to visit my new favourite gully, you should go to Zurich and to the Bärenbrüggli. And if you are already there, you should really take a very short walk to Haus Konstruktiv, a wonderful museum of Concrete Art or Constructivism, and see the current exhibitions. In the staircase (I think on the topmost floor), there is a piece by Geneviève Claisse which would have been the more beautiful inspiration for my circles.

Quiltmuster übertragen - Transfer Quilting Patterns

---------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------

When I am handquilting in public, I am often asked how I choose the patterns and how I transfer them to the quilt top. For my quilt "Piña Colocada" I quilted the "pineapple slices" with 1/4" form the seamlines. In some cases, I didn't even mark the lines (because the lines wouldn't have been visible on the patterned fabrics anyway).

For the "head" of the pineapple, I wanted a curved counterpart to the many points in the overall pattern. Therefore, I re-drew the Square in Square block in the middle of the repeat in EQ8 (EasyDraw), added the circle segments and printed it on thicker paper. The actual stencils are only a small and a big circle segment.
